Why Proper Storage for the American Flag Matters

The American flag serves as a powerful reminder of those who gave everything to protect our freedoms. More than just a piece of fabric, it embodies the ideals we all hold dear.

To honor and protect the sanctity of the American flag, the U.S. government established the U.S. Flag Code, a set of rules for displaying, handling, and storing the flag. According to these rules, the flag should not be flown in inclement weather — such as rain, snow, or heavy winds — unless it is an all-weather flag.

All-weather flags are specifically designed to endure harsher conditions. These durable flags are ideal for year-round outdoor use and can withstand typical weather for months, even years, before showing signs of wear. However, even all-weather flags have their limits. Severe storms like hurricanes, tornadoes, or blizzards can damage flags much faster than normal weather conditions. Just as you would store outdoor furniture during such events, it’s wise to take your flag down to protect it.

Flags not crafted for outdoor use, such as cotton American flags, are especially vulnerable to damage when flown in the rain. These flags are best suited for indoor displays or outdoor use during dry weather on patriotic holidays such as Veterans Day, Independence Day, Armed Forces Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, or Flag Day.

No matter the material, storing your American flag properly is crucial to protecting its beauty and extending its lifespan.

When to Consider Storing Your American Flag

Knowing when to store Old Glory is an important part of understanding proper flag etiquette. Whenever inclement weather is expected, including strong storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, or blizzards, you should remove your flag from its display. For regions with harsh winters, it may be appropriate to store your ensign all season long.

When the fabric fibers repeatedly freeze and thaw, they become damaged and weakened, shortening the flag's lifespan.

High winds are one of a flag's worst enemies. The constant pressure causes it to tear and fray, especially if the fibers are already weakened by the sun or longer weather exposure. Preserving your flag helps it retain its vibrancy and extends its lifespan, so you can replace it less frequently.

How to Store an American Flag

Whether you plan to use a storage unit for your flag or prefer self-storage, knowing how to properly store your American flag is crucial. Check out the steps below to ensure your ensign is protected and stored correctly.

Step One: Clean the Flag

Just like you wouldn't put dirty clothes back into your drawers, you never want to store an unclean ensign. Before placing it in a storage container, be sure to clean your ensign. Storing a dirty flag can lead to set in stains and may even attract pests who can eat through the fabric. This step is especially important for flags made from natural fibers like unbleached cotton. Step Two: Fold the Flag into a Triangle

The American flag should never be treated disrespectfully, even when in storage. When putting the American flag away, you should never crumble it up or toss it into a pile.

To ensure the flag is treated respectfully and protected from damage, it's important to properly fold the flag. You'll need two people on opposite ends holding the flag flat. Start by folding it in half lengthwise twice. Be sure to meet the open edge while keeping the union or blue field outward and visible. The person opposite the union then begins creating a triangular fold, starting with the striped folded edge and working upward until they reach the start of the union.

Now fold the union square into a triangle and tuck it into the already folded flag. For more information, please read our blog "How to Fold an American Flag for a Display Case.

Step Three: Place in a Plastic Storage Bag

Storing your flag in a plastic bag is an easy way to protect it from bugs and the elements. All textiles are susceptible to damage when stored, so placing them in a sealed container offers the best protection. To protect flags from damage, AmericanFlags.com offers a plastic vinyl storage bag that fits 5 x 9.5 ft flags. Additionally, if using items like tissue paper during storage, only choose acid-free materials to avoid discoloration and degrading of the fibers over time.

Step Four: Store in a Dark, Dry Place

Humidity can quickly damage flags, causing mildew and mold to grow. Natural fabrics are even more prone to moisture damage, which is why storing your ensign in a dry place is key. Many people choose an attic or basement, which is fine as long as they are dark and have humidity control. Sunlight will cause fading, even if filtered through a window, so be sure to place it in a concealed area.

Step Five: Regularly Check for Signs of Damage

Be sure to check your flag for signs of damage regularly, especially if it's in storage for an extended period of time. If it shows signs of discoloration or mildew, consider moving it to a different location.
