Where Does the Expression "Thin Blue Line" Originate? 

It may come as a surprise, but the expression "thin blue line" has military origins. The phrase started as the "thin red line," which was used in 1854 during the Crimean War by a British infantry regiment. Scottish Highlanders, who were a part of the regiment and wore red coats, held off an invading Russian cavalry charge, earning the respected nickname. 

A similar saying, "thin blue line," became popular in America with the 1911 poem "The Thin Blue Line" by Nels Dickmann Anderson. The expression was used to describe the blue uniforms commonly worn by American soldiers in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Thin Blue Line Flag: A Violation of Flag Etiquette? 

While the Thin Blue Line flag is controversial to some, for others, the concern is whether it violates proper flag etiquette. The issue is due to the color variations, with the traditional American flag colors in black and white while the white line under the stars is colored blue.
