The current flag of Bahrain is red with a white vertical stripe. The stripe has a serrated edge consisting of five triangles that represent the five pillars of Islam. The old Bahrain flag was completely red. When they signed a peace treaty with the British in 1820 a white stripe was introduced to commemorate the truce. The serrated edge was introduced in 1930, so that the Bahrain flag would be different from its neighbors. Initially the edge had 28 points. It was reduced to eight in 1972 and further reduced to five in 2002.
