Greece Flags

In the days of the Byzantine Empire, Greece had a flag with a white background and blue cross in the center. In each quarter was a “B.” The ones on the left hand side were back to front. In the 10th century the flag was blue with a white cross in the center. From this cross the letters XPI radiated. From 1431-1619 century the flag was white with a blue flag. In the center there was a picture of St. George killing the dragon. In the time of the Ottoman Empire the flag had 3 horizontal colors of red blue and red, in 1822-1969 and again in 1975-1978. The flag as we know it today has nine stripes of blue and white. On the top left side is a blue square with a white cross. It was used as the national flag from 1969-1970 and again from 1978 to the present day.
