India Flags

In 1904 the first Indian flag was designed by Sister Nivedita to break away from British rule. A square-shaped red flag with a yellow inset, the flag featured a white lotus and Vajra Chinha at its center. The Calcutta flag was flown in the years 1906-1908 in protest rallies. This was made up of three horizontal stripes: orange on the top, yellow in the middle and green at the bottom. Eight lotus flowers were on the orange square and the words, “Vande Mataram,” were written in Devanagari script in the yellow stripe. The sun and crescent moon were on the green stripe. In 1907 another flag was introduced. It had a green stripe on the top with eight lotus flowers. The central yellow stripe remained the same and the bottom red stripe had the crescent moon and sun reversed. In 1917 another flag emerged. Its background was green and red stripes with a union jack in the top left hand corner and the crescent moon and star in the top right corner. The official flag was adopted in 1947. It has three horizontal stripes of orange white and green. In the center is a cog wheel with 24 spokes.
