The Lesotho flag was adopted in 1987 after a military coup helped the country regain its independence. The original flag was adopted when Lesotho gained independence from Britain in 1966. While under British rule the country was called Basutoland. After the country's independence it was initially led by the Basotho National Party, which incorporated the colors of red, white, blue and green. The flag features the country's coat of arms and the inscription, "Khotso-Pula-Nata" or "Peace-Rain-Plenty". The white represents peace, the blue symbolizes rain and the green represents the fertile agricultural land. The shield in the coat of arms represents the willingness to defend the country's independence.
