Malaysia Flags

The Malaysia flag is thought to be a combination of both the United States flag and the traditional symbol of Islam, the crescent and star. There are 14 horizontal stripes and a 14-pointed star that represent the 13 member states of the Malaysian federation and the Federal District of Kuala Lumpur. The flag is based on a design that was adopted in 1950 while Malaysia (Federation of Malaya) was still a British protectorate. The original flag had 11 stripes and an 11-point star but 3 more were added when new states were added. While Singapore left the federation in 1965 they opted not to change the flag. The flag is named "Jalur Gemilang" meaning "Glorious Stripes."
