Maldives Flags

The Maldives flag has a red background with a large green rectangle. In the middle of the green rectangle is a white crescent. The red color of the background represents the blood that was lost during the fight for independence. Green stands for peace and prosperity and the color of the many palm trees found on the island. The crescent stands for the Islamic faith, the faith of the nation. The first flag of Maldives was plain red. The crescent was then added but was pointed towards the left until 1949. The current flag was made official in July of 1968.
