Mauritania Flags

The Mauritania flag was adopted on April 1, 1959 as Mauritania was gaining independence from France. The flag features a green base with a yellow crescent and five-point star in the middle. The green and gold colors reflected in the flag are the traditional colors of Pan-Africa. Green is also a significant color in the Islamic religion, the main religion of the country. Gold is thought to represent the Sahara Desert. The crescent and star are traditional Islamic symbols. The flag is rumored to have been designed by the former president of Mauritania, Mukthar Ould Dada.
