The Netherlands flag is made up of three equal-sized horizontal stripes of red, white and blue. The red stripe was originally orange and the three colors of orange, blue and white made up the coat of arms of Prince William of Orange who led the fight for Dutch independence. The current flag was adopted in 1937. It is nicknamed the Prince's Flag. The orange stripe was changed to red in the 17th century, possibly to be more visible from a distance. The design of the Netherlands flag was used in the making of the Russian flag.
