The Spanish flag consists of three horizontal stripes. The country's coat of arms is located on the middle yellow stripe just left of center. Adopted in 1981, the current flag is a variation of a flag that was used as far back as 1785 when Carlos III ruled Spain. Red and yellow were used to create the flag. For a time the flag incorporated a purple stripe but the original flag was reinstated in 1931. The coat of arms is from the emblem of the House of Bourbon.
