Madagascar adopted its official flag on October 14, 1958 and gained independence from France on June 26, 1960. The flag is white, red and green. Red and white were the colors of the flag of the Merina kingdom, which became part of France in 1896 and later became Madagascar. Red and white are also the colors of the Indonesian flag where many Malagasy people have their origins. Today people believe that white represents purity, red stands for sovereignty and green means hope. The three shapes of color are equal in size with one white vertical stripe and horizontal stripes of red and green.
