Iran Flags

The flag of Iran was first used in 998-1030 and featured a black background and yellow moon. The next flag, in effect from 1030-1052, replaced the moon with a ceremonial lion. The different dynasties developed different flags. During the Pahlavi Dynasty the modern day Iran flag started to emerge. From 1925-1964 there were three narrow horizontal stripes featuring green on top, white in the center and red on the bottom. From1925-1964 a lion was placed in the center. From 1964-1980 the stripes became wider and the lion was removed. From 1964-1980 the lion returned in the center of the flag. In 1980 a red emblem replaced the lion and a border of small white squares surrounded the white stripe.
