Lebanon Flags

Consisting of three equal horizontal stripes, the official flag of Lebanon features a white stripe cutting across the center of a field of red. A green cedar tree is centered in the middle of the flag on the white stripe. The tree, a symbol of the Maronite Christians of Lebanon, has been used since the 18th century and is said to represent peace, immortality and tolerance. The red stripes on the top and bottom of the flag represent self-sacrifice and martyrdom. The red also symbolizes the Kayssites and the white the Yemmenites who were opposing clans between 634 and 1711. The flag was created in 1920 in France and uses the French flag as its basis.
