Papua - New Guinea Flags

The Papua New Guinea flag was adopted in 1971 and has been used since the nation gained independence from Australia in 1975. The three main colors of the flag are the traditional colors found in Papua New Guinean clothing and art. The yellow bird represents freedom as an independent nation. The white stars on the black background represent the Southern Cross constellation and denote the country's placement geographically. It also links them to Australia, which also uses the Southern Cross on its flag. The flag design was chosen as a result of a national competition in 1971. A local art teacher, Susan Karike, submitted the design.
