Philippines Flags

The Philippines flag was originally adopted in 1898 after the Philippines gained independence from Spain. The United States then took control of the Philippines in 1907. For a short time in the 1940s, the Philippines was under Japanese rule. In 1945, the United States again took control of the Philippines and granted the nation independence in 1946. The flag was reinstated and underwent minor changes in 1997. The blue stripe symbolizes patriotism and justice. White is for equality. Red represents the blood shed for freedom. The three stars show the position of the country and the sun represents independence. When the Philippines are at war the flag is flown upside down.
