The first Croatian flag was used in 1848. It was made up of three horizontal stripes of red at the top, blue at the bottom and white in the center. From 1945-1990 there was a large red star in the center of the flag. From June-December 1990 the star was replaced by a checkered shield. On December 1990 the full coat of arms was enlarged and placed in the center. This is the modern day flag.
