Also known as the Royal Banner of Scotland, the design originates from King Richard's reign, with the English using an emblem of a rampant lion on its hind legs. This flag was used by the King of Scots until the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when James VI acceded to the thrones of the kingdoms of England and Ireland. This lion was eventually used for the Scottish Coat of Arms and incorporated into the Great Seal of Scotland.
